Sydney Wedding Photography Locations
Being based in Sydney we’re spoilt by a huge selection of natural beauty and iconic spots; waterfront or city, mountains or bush, beach or parkland. Below I’ve tried to cover the spectrum and perhaps include some you may not have thought of and give you an idea of accessibility and best time of day to shoot. I hope you find it helpful.
Easter Suburbs Wedding Location – Little Bay
Little Bay may not be as popular as the likes of Bondi or Watson’s Bay however, with the quirky Little Bay Chapel and easy access to clifftop photography it’s a great choice for small ceremonies. And if you choose one of the nearby golf clubs for the wedding reception they’ll give you golf buggies to drive around the greens, fun!
Sydney Harbour Wedding Location – Botanic Gardens
With Sydney landmarks, the Opera House and Harbour Bridge as the backdrop, the Royal Botanic Gardens, looking out from Mrs Macquarie’s Chair, is an iconic wedding photography location that works at any time of the day. You can always wonder into the gardens for some flower filled shots or take shade under one of the waterside Moreton bay fig trees. The nearby Intercontinental hotel is a historic Harbour view wedding reception venue in Sydney and with it’s sandstone brick walls both outside and inside it’s an ideal place to capture Sydney’s history.
Sydney Harbour Wedding Photography Location – Bradley’s Head
Bradley’s Head has a view of Sydney Harbour with the sun setting over the iconic Opera House and Harbour Bridge. There’s also an amphitheatre to host your outdoor wedding ceremony and small beach, lighthouse and military tunnels providing a lot of variety for your wedding location photography.
Mountain Wedding Photography Location – Blue Mountains Flat Rock
If the mountains are your thing, there are so many spots in the Blue Mountains that offer stunning views for your engagement or wedding photography away from bus loads of tourists. Flat rock is still popular, especially at sunset when the sunlight floods the valley, however, a commitment to getting up at sunrise can mean you have it to yourselves and it’s one of very few spots that remain without fencing for an uninterrupted view. Brace yourselves or bring a blanket, it can get windy. The next spot is a little hidden so you’ll have to contact me to find out more (ssshh it’s a secret). It’s truly breathtaking especially when the valleys fill with mist and the sunlight hits the mountain face.
Waterfall Wedding Photography Location – Blue Mountains Wentworth Falls
Wentworth falls is the most popular in the Blue Mountains and with quite a trek to get to the bottom it’s not always feasible as a wedding photography location, however, some beautiful shots can be achieved 10 minutes walk from the road and you’ll likely get them tourist free too. If you’d like to go to the base of the falls, an engagement photography session is just the time to do it.
Garden Wedding Location – Blue Mountains Everglades Gardens
Everglades gardens in Leura provides many different opportunities for wedding and engagement photography with it’s lush green lawns and European foliage, it’s a beautiful garden with mountain backdrops. Officially you will need a permit for wedding photography costing $250 for 2 hours.
Garden Wedding Location – Wendy Whiteley’s Secret Garden
Wendy’s Secret Gardens, as the name suggests is pretty secret, even if you have lived in Sydney all of your life, there’s a chance you may never have been there. It’s prime location doesn’t take away from it’s intimate, peaceful vibe and even on a busy day you can find a quiet corner to snuggle up to your favourite person. Filled with character from rusty bikes, to kitchen sinks and Tinkerbell (see blog post) this place is a real gem for a nature filled and Harbour view Sydney engagement photography session or wedding photography location.
Waterside Wedding Location – La Perouse
La Perouse is a hotspot for pre wedding photography with sunset over the water, sheltered beaches and with wedding ceremony locations such as the historic Bare Island Fort and cute Little Bay Chapel nearby it’s easy to see why. Wedding reception venues include several nearby golf clubs that often give you golf carts to head out onto the greens for some fun, pristine green, ocean view portrait photography.
Under the bridge leading to Bare Island provides a cool ‘hideaway’ wedding photography location.
Beach Wedding Location – Maroubra Beach
Maroubra beach is one of the quietest in the Eastern Suburbs and with a wedding ceremony and reception venue Horizons right on the water it’s an excellent spot for a beach wedding. You can even have your ceremony on the beach, with the sound of the waves, in windy weather it can be quite loud, on a calm day, with the rugged headlands wrapped around you, it a perfect beach wedding location.
Alternatively the eastern suburbs beaches get stunning sunrise light, a great option for an engagement photography session.
Historic Wedding Photography Location – The Rocks
The Sydney Harbour area holds so much variety for wedding photography locations many accessible within a short walk, drive or ferry ride away. The Rocks is one of Sydney’s oldest areas and a popular spot for wedding photography with it’s cobbled laneway charm, historic ‘Door 64’ and ‘The Pink House’ are particularly popular spots for wedding photography. For breathtaking Harbour views, Observatory hill is close by or why not venture to Luna Park for some colourful fun at the fair wedding photography (coming soon).
Wedding Photography Location – Paddington Reservoir Gardens
Another hidden gem in Sydney’s east is Paddington Reservoir Gardens, I walked past it for many years having no idea it was there. With many former lives including a petrol station and a garage it is now a heritage listed refuge, a sun trap and popular wedding photography location as the next image shows!
Wedding Photography Location – Sydney City
Sydney City is a popular wedding photography location and also one of the most popular pre wedding photography locations. Sydney CBD provides a stunning backdrop of old meets new with the grand, sandstone Sydney GPO occupying No 1 Martin Place and the close-by hanging bird cage installation ‘Forgotten Songs’ at Recital Hall, Angel Place.Down hidden laneways you’ll find cool, textured walls, doorways and bars including Palmer & Co where this couple met. There’s also the stunning, historic Queen Victoria Building (QVB) and laneways of The State Theatre which I’d love to shoot at for that vintage look.
